Aspect ratio is used to describe an image's dimensions based on width to height. For example, standard television in the U.S. is 4x3, in other words, 4 units wide to 3 units tall. Hi Def television is 16x9, or 16 units wide to 9 units tall. Aspect ratio is also described in other ways- 4x3 television is also expressed as 1.33:1, 16x9 television as 1.78:1, standard U.S. theatrical motion pictures as 1.85:1 and widescreen motion pictures as 2.35:1.
