RAID stands for ‘redundant array of independent disks’, and refers to a data storage unit that utilizes multiple disks in a logical configuration. It provides fault tolerance, in the event of a disk drive failure by mirroring data between the disks in one of several ways, called RAID levels. The increased number of disk drives also offers a higher data rate throughput than a single drive.
