Alfred S. Campbell was a photographer and entrepreneur. Born in England, he emigrated to the U.S. and managed Napoleon Sarony's studio. He founded Alfred S. Campbell Art Company in Elizabeth NJ, which was also known as AS Campbell Art Company. He then opened Campbell Studios, in New York City, with Rudolf Eickemeyer. Campbell's fine art photographs are in the Alfred Stieglitz Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This piece has a full beveled edge glass front secured onto a wood base with ornate carved wood pieces at bottom. The text at the bottom appears to have been handwritten directly onto then photograph prior to being secured directly onto the back of the glass.
