A watercolor painting on birch bark by Lucille Miller. Manuel and Lucille Miller sold art as Birchland Wildlife in Bethel, VT during the early 1950s. Lucille did the painting and Manuel framed them. They also made and painted wooden plates and bowls. In 1955 Lucille decided that the Selective Service Act violated the 13th amendment. She told neighborhood draftees of her belief and was indicted. She advocates defense by a strong army of well paid volunteers. The US attorney questioned whether she was sane enough to understand the gravity of the charge. Accordingly, Judge Gibson sent her to a lunatic asylum. Read the Lucille Miller story great story about these pieces .
