Mud Cloth-also called Bogolan- is one of Africa’s most unusual textiles. Narrow strips of handwoven cotton are stitched together into a whole cloth then painted using a variety of natural dyes including river mud that has been aged up to one year. Each cloth is a unique creation. This piece was purchased in Mali.
Pictures of the back of the painting show the traditional means of making a mud cloth canvas.
The male figure looks like he is playing a harp-like instrument called a bolon. The owl in African art often symbolizes impending danger and the snake transformation and protection.
This is a primitive art piece so condition is hard to define. The painting has not been stretched, or exposed to prolonged sunlight. Nevertheless it is on rough cloth with unfinished edges so I have listed it as “Good”. Dimensions: 19.25 inches by 18.5 inches.
