This is a pea coat from Buzz Rickson's.
This pea coat is from the 1910s, when it was adopted by the U.S. Navy as a coat for non-commissioned officers. The characteristics of the pea coat from the 1910s are the use of thick, high-density Melton wool material and the anchor buttons engraved with 13 stars representing the American coat of arms. These 13 stars are derived from the fact that there were 13 states when the United States became independent as a nation in 1777. The exact time when the U.S. Navy adopted the pea coat is unknown, but overcoats were already listed as non-commissioned officer coats in the clothing regulations of the time of World War I. The large collar is designed to be able to cover the face by standing up the collar when working at sea, ensuring sufficient protection against strong winds. The pockets are vertically attached slit-type pockets, which are hand warmer pockets to warm frozen hands. After the 1930s, production efficiency and cost were reviewed, the fabric was made lighter, and the 13-star buttons were abolished.
