In contrast to the traditional kokeshi of Tohoku, Usaburo Kokeshi are called modern kokeshi, & are characterized by their freedom without being bound by shape. The round-headed kokeshi to a young girl with a bob haircut was symbolic of that flexibility. The basic form of the kokeshi dolls that Usaburo completed is this bob haircut with a plump, rounded body. The simple, flowing lines of the dolls have an archaic oriental beauty to them, and their design has earned them acclaim in overseas markets as well.
