The ebony sculpture depicts a proud looking African woman from the Samburu tribe, an ethnic group related to the Maasai, residing in northern Kenya.
The statue is roughly 18” tall and carrying a vessel that could represent fertility.
The Maasai people began migrating south in the 15th century and settled in central Tanzania and Northern Kenya during the 17th and 18th centuries. Given that the statue depicts traditional dress, it is likely it was created sometime after the 18th century. Probably carved in the early 19th century.
Its fine craftsmanship and incredible detail indicate the makers skill and dedication to the craft.
There appears to be a heart shape carved in the back. The wood is checked from the top to the bottom but not all the way through. Please look at all the photos for defects prior to purchasing. What you see is what you get. She is beautiful!
