SMART 1940s' BLACK FELT TILT HAT WITH SHINY BLACK TRIM + TALL FEATHERS

This is a beautiful sample of the elegant millinery fashions of the 1940s'. It consists of a round felt structure in the shape of a doughnut (without the hole), with an attached grosgrain band at the back to hold the hat in place. The top of the hat is beautifully trimmed with shiny black curled strips, as photographed. The center top of the hat has black veiling that wraps around a tall black feather spray. Simply gorgeous!Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these. The wartime 40’s saw a huge variety of hats that were suitable for any face shape, hairstyle or personal preference. Throughout the war & on both sides of the Atlantic, elaborate creations brightened dreary utility fashions, brought about by rationing. The only items not rationed were hat materials. Explosions of feathers, veiling & artificial flowers were popular. There is no designer label, indicating it was a custom-made creation.This is an authentic piece of fashion history! This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Feathers, straw, flowers & veils are fragile, given their age.
