Kobo Abe (1924-1993)
Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine. Won the Akutagawa Prize in 1951 (Showa 26) for his work The Wall. His 1962 novel *The Woman in the Dunes* won the Yomiuri Literary Prize and the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger in France. He received numerous other awards, including the Tanizaki Jun'ichirō Prize for his play Friends and the Yomiuri Literary Prize for *Green Stockings*. From 1973, he formed the theater group Kobo Abe Studio, and was known for his unique theatrical activities. He was highly acclaimed internationally, becoming an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1992 (Heisei 4). He died suddenly of acute heart failure in 1993.
