The sanseido's pocket japanese to engilsh dictionary was my dictionary of choice while I was learning Japanese. It is so compact that it can be slipped in a jacket pocket and is also printed small and tight to fit thousands of words! For 2 years I carried it around in Japan and whenever anyone said some word I didn't know I'd try and look it up. I marked it whenever I learned a word and now I can look through it and quiz myself on vocab by just scaning the margins for my little dots. the dictionary is in all kanji/kana so you need some background in the 50 basic Japanese characters to start using the dictionary, and watch out for the cross references. You won't be able to read them if you don't know kanji. But that's ok because all the most important words have their own entry anyway.
