## Not All About Japanimation

There are two main narratives when discussing Japanese animation. One, starting in 1917, focuses on Toei Douga and encompasses experimental and puppet animation, continuing to the present day. The other, starting with Osamu Tezuka, extends through the Yoshida brothers and Sunrise, leading to the current mainstream Japanimation. These two narratives, depending on which perspective you take, drastically alter the meaning of Japanese animation history. They can be considered different historical viewpoints that define the history of anime. For the sake of this discussion, let's call the former the orthodox historical view and the latter the otaku historical view.

With this in mind, this book is a culmination of anime research from a time when there wasn't a clear division between these two perspectives. It's essentially the standard for the orthodox historical view of anime, a true canonical work. In recent years, discussions about anime have leaned heavily towards the otaku historical view, neglecting experimental and puppet animation in favor of TV anime and OADs. Furthermore, there's limited attention given to international animation. This creates a situation where the role these forms of animation played in the development of Japanese animation is overlooked. While it's not impossible to consider them on an equal footing, given the current level of exposure of these forms, it would be a significant undertaking. Challenging the otaku historical view and discussing anime from the orthodox historical perspective is a difficult task. This book is crucial for breaking down the common perception that animation is solely limited to cel animation, limited animation, and Japanese animation, and for achieving a broader, more fundamental approach to animation. While there's also the work of Nobuhiko Tsukamoto, this book remains a unique and timeless masterpiece.
