ARCHIMEDES of Syracuse Sicily Magna Graecia Art by Nicolò Barabino 1892 Print

This is an illustration / print that has been taken from a book dated 1902 and is ready for framing. Measures approximately 12 x 9 1/2 inches. There is an image text summary on the attached rice paper.
Archimedes was born c. 287 BC in the seaport city of Syracuse, Sicily, at that time a self-governing colony in Magna Graecia. The date of birth is based on a statement by the Byzantine Greek scholar John Tzetzes that Archimedes lived for 75 years before his death in 212 BC. Plutarch wrote in his Parallel Lives that Archimedes was related to King Hiero II, the ruler of Syracuse, although Cicero suggests he was of humble origin. In the Sand-Reckoner, Archimedes gives his father's name as Phidias, an astronomer about whom nothing else is known.
