This is an illustration / print that has been taken from a book dated 1902 and is ready for framing. Measures approximately 11 x 8 1/2 inches. There is a story summary about the image on the attached rice paper.
The hippogriff is a legendary creature with the front half of an eagle and the hind half of a horse. It was invented at the beginning of the 16th century by Ludovico Ariosto in his Orlando Furioso. Within the poem, the hippogriff is a steed born of a mare and a griffin—something considered impossible. Ruggiero is the subject of two possible prophecies. His first possible fate is to convert to Christianity, marry Bradamante and sire a line of heroes that lead to the noble house of Este in Italy, but will be betrayed and killed soon after his marriage.
