The Blackwell Zinc Company (BZC) history began in 1915. When full operation of the smelter began in December of 1916, it was the largest multi-condenser horizontal retort plant in the nation and, in one report, the world. At its peak in the 1960’s, it produced 93,700 tons of zinc in a year and employed more than 800 workers.
In the winter of 73/74 the Largest zinc smelter in the United States was closed down forever. It turns out that the smelter had been destroying the neighborhood and poisoning the local citizens. (Think Erin Brocovich).
A 119M settlement was eventually reached.
This token was probably created to commemorate the 57 years the smelter had operated ( 1916-1973). One was probably handed out to every current employee.
This token is stamped 1084, and I suppose each token was individually numbered.
This is a piece of Oklahoman history. Representing almost 200 million dollars in damages paid out to Oklahomans.
