These coins were originally struck at the San Francisco Mint for use in the Philippines.
Over 15 million pesos were reportedly dumped into Manila Bay in 1942 during World War II to prevent them from falling into enemy hands, making salvaged coins from this period significant relics.
This particular coin appears to exhibit saltwater damage, which is characteristic of coins salvaged from the "Caballo Bay Treasure" or similar underwater recoveries.
The coinage was designed by artist Melecio Figueroa and introduced in 1903 as the legal tender for the Philippine Islands, exchangeable for United States currency at a rate of two Philippine Pesos to one United States Dollar.
