A gaiwan or zhong is a Chinese lidded bowl without a handle, used for the infusion of tea leaves and the consumption of tea. It was invented during the Ming dynasty. This exquisite porcelain cup was purchased by my parents vacationing in Japan in September 1968. There is no saucer. Un-used and in immaculate condition.

Note: 24K gold paint is used on this cup and so is not microwave safe.

"Imari" refers to "...a Western term for a brightly-colored style of... Japanese porcelain made in the area of Arita...northwestern Kyūshū, Japan. -from Wiki-Pedia
