In the past, and sometimes still, fountain pens were used and these types of blotters were used to ensure the ink was dry before folding up the correspondence. A nice addition to your desk and still useful. The top unscrews in order to add more blotting paper to the felt and wood blotting part. Beautiful wire and enamel work.
