The Bridge of Sighs is an enclosed bridge made of white limestone, connecting the Doge's Palace to the New Prison across the Rio di Palazzo.
It was built in the early 17th century and designed by Antonio Contino.
The bridge's name is believed to come from the sighs of prisoners who, crossing it, would catch their last glimpse of Venice's beauty before imprisonment.
Despite its somber origin, a modern legend suggests that if lovers kiss in a gondola under the bridge at sunset, their love will last forever, making it a romantic symbol.
