Casino History: The Silver Bird Hotel & Casino originally opened as The Thunderbird in 1948, becoming the fourth resort on the Las Vegas Strip. It was renamed the Silver Bird in 1977 after being acquired by Major Riddle, who also owned the Silver Nugget and Silver City casinos, aligning the property with his "silver" theme.
Operating Years: The Silver Bird operated under that name from 1977 until its closure on December 3, 1981, following Major Riddle's death and subsequent bankruptcy proceedings for his estate Later Incarnations: After its closure as the Silver Bird, the property was purchased by Ed Torres and reopened in 1982 as the El Rancho. The El Rancho closed in 1992 and was ultimately imploded in 2000 to make way for new development, including what is now the Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
