Composition and Dimensions: This 50 Pesos coin is made of nickel-plated steel, weighs approximately 2 grams, and has a diameter of 17 millimeters.
Significance: The spectacled bear is the only bear species native to South America and is an endangered species, making its inclusion on the coin a nod to Colombian biodiversity and conservation efforts. The design of this coin, along with the 100 and 200 pesos coins in the same series, was created by Colombian artist José Antonio Suárez.
Circulation: The Banco de la República (Central Bank of Colombia) began issuing these 50 Colombian Pesos coins in 2012, and they are currently still in circulation. Although still legal tender, their low value means cash transactions are often rounded to the nearest 100 pesos.
