Set of four gorgeous antique 1903 Monbijou Rosenthal & Co. plates made in Bavaria, Germany.
The “Monbijou” (French for “my jewel”) design alludes to Monbijou Palace, once the home of Prussian royalty & known for its famously elaborate gardens.
Rosenthal’s interpretation of Monbijou is characterized by sprays of leafy florals & fruit; these particular pieces feature sprigs of various berries. The namesake castle’s rococo style is echoed in pronounced scalloped edges with thick lines of gold trim. Faint hints of blue & pink give the body a pearlescent sheen.
Each plate is hand-painted, signed & dated by the artist on the back. Approx. 8”
These plates are in amazing condition, artwork that survived over a century amidst the turbulence of German nationalist extremists (Rosenthal & Co’s Jewish founder, Phillip Rosenthal, was exiled in 1935 & his 10 companies seized until his son reclaimed assets in 1950).
