A Very well preserved, mid to late 19th century, American nautical hand-held pocket compass, rendered in teak hardwood mahogany with a silver alloy face, glass lens and a hand painted black ink numeral dial. The compass is still in extraordinary condition and the mahogany case, is without loss or noticeable damage. The wood remains supple and has naturally aged teak hardwood color. The case was not previously lacquered or varnished but rather oiled to maintain the wood's natural moisture when exposed to the harsh conditions of wind, rain, sun and salt water, while at sea. The compass has an undisturbed, cut brass plate rear hinge, with three slot screws, holding the brass hinge firmly in place. The front of the wooden compass case has two intact brass swing hooks, which latch onto two brass metal fasteners, holding the compass lid lid tightly closed to ensure safety from the harmful effects of being at Sea
(Circa 1860-1885)
