Alpha Channel

Overview

An alpha channel is an additional channel of image data dedicated to storing a transparency matte for a given image. Usually invisible to the end user, most software provides the ability to view the alpha channel in order to help diagnose potential issues when compositing that image over a background. RGB images can be premultiplied against their alpha channels, or unpremultiplied, a state also referred to as ‘straight.’!
