The term “extras” refers to the non-speaking performers that fill the background of a scene. They’re often used to populate outdoor shots, armies in war movies, and public spaces, among other things. On set, the term “Extras” is rarely used; “background talent” or “atmosphere” may be used in it’s place. In the 21st century, digital extras have become a common way to fill out larger sets, using crowd simulation software to generate the CG characters.
