Film Gauge refers to the width of the film and is measured in millimeters. Each gauge can be utilized in different ways, allowing for different aspect ratios to be extracted from the shot footage.

The most prevalent gauge is 35 mm, which is used in the majority of film and television programming.

16 mm is commonly chosen for it’s ability to be blown up to 35 mm while maintaining a lower cost. It is mainly used for independent films, advertising, and documentaries.

Super 8 was popularized due to consumer film cameras, and was supplied in self-contained cartridges.

65 mm is used mainly for large format presentations, such as IMAX and OMNIMAX.
