A wide shot refers to a camera framing at a significant distance from the actors. Wide shots are used to establish location, usually at the start of a scene, to give the audience a reference and orientation as to where events are playing out. Directors usually cut immediately to closer shots of actors after an establishing wide shot.

An exception to this rule is the epic battle sequence, where multiple wide shots are used to display the scope of the fighting.
