Creating the ‘The Light House’ Look

Overview

Hurlbut Academy takes us behind the scenes of the production of ‘The Lighthouse’ – a gritty, black and white film starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Director Robert Eggers and DoP Jarin Blaschke used black and white filmstock developed in the 1950’s, and a 1.19:1 aspect ratio to capture the look of The Lighthouse. Extensive set-construction and production work was also needed to generate the necessary light conditions on a remote, stormy Atlantic island in winter-time. This awesome BTS reveals the creative techniques Eggers and Blaschke employed to recreate a 1910’s-era film in 2020.
