A diffusion filter is a lens filter that softens the subject. In addition to professional diffusing lenses, cinematographers will sometimes apply petroleum jelly to a glass filter or apply a stocking to the end of the lens or between the lens assembly and the main camera chassis.

In postproduction, a diffusion effect can be created by screening a blurred version of an image back over the original.
