Matte

Overview

A matte is a grayscale image used by graphics software to identify specific pixels in an image. Most commonly mattes are used to composite one image over an other. In such cases, pure white regions of the matte indicate areas where the foreground will completely obscure the background and black pixels indicate areas where only the background will be visible. Intermediate gray pixels indicate semi-transparent regions where the foreground blends with the background.
