Greenscreen has been the standard VFX tool for filmmakers for decades. However, it has well-known drawbacks, often manifested in noticeable vfx flubs or incongruent lighting. Or simply the overuse of it in action movies, that many of us have grown tired of. HBO’s The Mandalorian doesn’t use Greenscreen for a single shot. Instead, they opted for the use of a Virtual Set for design, imagery, lighting, and more. While a Virtual set is an enormous initial investment, its sheer performance and long-term cost savings make it likely to be the industry standard of the future.
