Highlight, midtone, and shadows are terms that describe the tonal values of different areas in an image. Highlights consist of the brightest areas, shadows consist of the darkest, and midtones lie in between the two. Most of the time, adjustments can be made to these areas to either bring out more detail in blown out or underexposed footage, or increase contrast for a stylistic effect.
