Connecting shots are used whenever it’s difficult to frame all subjects in a scene in a single shot. In the case of our scene, the boy and his father by the bench are far enough away from the two characters in dialogue to make it difficult to frame all of them together without shooting so wide that it would become disconnected from the action. This shot works to connect the two locations. We can now cute to either a shot of the bench location, or a shot of the dialogue, and the audience has a comfortable understanding of the relationship between them.
