Cutaway

Overview

A cutaway is essentially a shot of something in the scene that isn’t part of the interaction between the main characters. Usually, cutaways add atmosphere to the scene. This could be a close up of a phone ringing, or cut to a clock to indicate the time. Cutaway shots are useful during edits as B-roll to cover up discontinuities and dialog edits.
